Are Your Ducts in a Row?
Don’t Let Leaky Ducts Drain Your Wallet Have you ever stopped to consider the process that heats your home in the dead of winter and cools it during the treacherous summer heat? If you are like most people, just being comfortable is your bottom line.

DUCT INSULATION
Uninsulated or poorly insulated ducts can also cause occupant discomfort, especially during the winter months. As conditioned air moves through uninsulated ducts, it loses heat through conduction.

DUCT SEALING
In new, tightly constructed houses, ducts can account for20 percent to 25 percent of the total air leakage. Leaky ducts located in unconditioned spaces can introduce airborne pollutants, moisture, and unpleasant odors into homes, thus reducing indoor air quality.

HIGH-EFFICIENCY LIGHTING
Lighting accounts for as much as 10 to 15 percent of the energy used in a typical residence. Much of this consumption is unnecessary due to the use of inefficient incandescent bulbs or lights left on in unoccupied rooms or outdoors.

ENERGY EFFICIENT APPLIANCES
Appliances use a significant portion of the energy used in a home, accounting for 35 percent of total energy use on average and up to 50 percent in mild climates. Residential energy use accounts for approximately 20 percent of the air pollution generated in the United States.

ENERGY STAR® PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTATS
Space heating and cooling systems are designed to maintain temperatures within an occupant defined range commonly referred to as the “comfort zone.” Thermostats are devices that measure interior temperatures and turn these systems on and off according to the thermostat settings.
